Field Names

In the course of the Townlands Project four hundred and thirty five  field names have been collected and recorded  within the nine Townlands of the old Civil Parish of Rathcoole. The process involved at least two visits to almost fifty farms some of which lie outside the old Parish boundary. All names have been recorded wherever they have been offered.
The process is ongoing and contributions are most welcome.

The names of the fields have been listed and archived according to their Townland.
There are nine Townlands in the parish of Rathcoole. :
Tullabrin, Agha, Carrigeen, Johnswell, Mount Nugent Lower, Mount Nugent Upper, Knocknacuppoge, Coolbricken, Sandfordscourt.

In addition some field names have been supplied from the following townlands: Kilkieran, Knockshanbally, Cramersgrove and Revanagh.

It is now possible to view all of the recorded fields within the parish landscape online by means of the website for Kilkenny County Council. The generous provision to the project of this GIS application now makes it possible to identify each recorded field by name within the landscape. All field names have been recorded as supplied by the informant whether in writing or in speech. Over time and in another format we will endeavour to provide likely translations for the names that have been phonetically provided in Irish by those who do not speak the language.
